Sir Lawrence informed me [Sir Vincent] of one of the legends regarding Perytons from the Realm of Castles. It is said when the Lion was creating monsters to fight the Unicorn and her creations he started with the most brutal then made each one in turn a little less brutal but more cunning. The Peryton is believed to be the second to last monster the Lion created.

From what study I [Damien] have done on these creatures I will add that they have every advantage belonging to the deer that they resemble including the uncanny ability to camoflauge themselves within forested or overgrown areas.
In addition the male of the species is more capable in mimicry than the female, able to mimic entire sentences well enough to carry on "conversations," though I have never heard tell of one actually being able to hold a true conversation, simply parrot enough mimiced sentences to sound convincing from a distance. The female, on the other hand, I have only ever heard of mimicing words, possibly a phrase, but never full sentences.
I have also heard, in my travels, that the male is more skilled in its ability to disguises it’s true appearance. I have heard several stories of male Peryton appearing as wounded or injured humans for the purpose of luring unwary victims into a trap. While I have heard accounts of female peryton being involved in such attacks, I have never heard of a female being the disguised bait. Rather accounts I have heard place the female hidden somewhere in the vicinity waiting to catch the unwary victim from behind or on the flanks.
